What Is Urethane Casting?

Urethane casting is a process that utilizes a two-part liquid urethane resin to produce production-quality plastic parts through a silicone mold. It creates highly precise replicas of a master pattern and is a cost-effective and fast-turnaround method for creating prototypes and parts for small production runs.

Typical Cast Urethane Uses

  • Rapid Prototyping: Urethane casting allows quick prototype production, with first parts ready in as little as three days and the rest in two weeks. It’s flexible and easy to modify as needed.
  • Bridge Tooling: Urethane casting is great for bridge tooling, allowing parts to be made in small batches while you wait for full-scale production tools.
  • Consumer Testing: Urethane prototypes are widely used for testing with consumers, helping manufacturers quickly and affordably test different sizes, strengths, materials, and colors.

Urethane Casting Process

  • Master Pattern Creation: First, we create a master pattern of your part using 3D printing. We use high-resolution methods like CNC machining or SLA 3D printing to make smooth, detailed parts. The master pattern is then hand-finished for the best surface quality before moving on to the mold-making process.

 

  • Making the Mold: Next, place the master pattern inside a mold frame, then pour liquid silicone around it. The silicone hardens around the pattern, capturing all its details. After it cures, the mold is split into two halves, and the master pattern is removed, leaving a cavity shaped like the part.

 

  • Cast Urethane Molding: In the final step, liquid urethane or silicone is poured into the silicone mold. The mold is placed in a chamber to remove air bubbles from the material. For opaque parts, the chamber is pressurized, and for clear parts, a vacuum is used to improve clarity and reduce bubbles. After curing, the mold is opened, and the finished part is removed. This process is repeated to make as many parts as needed.
