Acrylic Fabrication

CNC MILLING

CNC Milling removes material from the surface of the Acrylic sheet or block with high-speed rotated cutting tools to create high precision acrylic parts.

CNC Turning Acrylic

CNC TURNING

CNC turning acrylic uses a lathe where the acrylic block is rotated while a cutting tool is fed into it to remove the material to produce cylindrical acrylic parts.

Surface Finishing

Our Surface finishing techniques for Acrylic parts include polishing, Laser Engraving, Screen printing, Flame Polishing, UV Curing, Spray Painting, Dyeing and Coating.

About Acrylic CNC Machining

Acrylic is easy to machine and can be shaped using CNC mills and lathes, allowing for complex cuts. However, it needs careful handling because it can crack or craze during machining and after processing. CNC machining applies just the right amount of force to shape acrylic without damaging it.

For the best results, use a tool made for cutting acrylic, and choose the right feed rate and RPM to avoid melting the material.

Acrylic becomes soft when heated, which is why CNC machining can create smooth edges that often don’t need extra finishing. This method offers high precision, repeatability, and is more efficient and cost-effective than manual machining of acrylic, which is more prone to breakage

What is Acrylic or PMMA?

Acrylic is clear, lightweight thermoplastic and doesn’t break down easily from UV light. It’s strong and stiff, making it a great alternative to glass for many uses. Acrylic machining is commonly used in industries like automotive and test equipment.

Acrylic can be melted and reshaped without losing its basic properties. One of its main advantages over other clear plastics is that it doesn’t yellow or fade when exposed to sunlight for a long time. It’s also lighter and more resistant to impact than glass. However, unlike glass, acrylic isn’t suitable for high-temperature uses.

Key Benefits of Acrylic

  • Lightweight, yet durable
  • Highly machinable
  • Translucent
  • Chemical Resistance
  • Temperature Resistance
  • Optical Clarity
  • Weather and UV resistant
  • Excellent impact resistance compared to glass
  • recyclable

Applications for acrylic parts

  • Light pipes
  • Lenses
  • Light shades
  • Optical fibers
  • Signage
  • Displays
  • Transparent manifolds
  • Automotive trims
  • Lighting fixtures
  • Furnitures

Finishes Of Acrylic

  • Vapor Polishing: uses a solvent to smooth the surface of acrylic, making it great for irregular shapes and features like holes and threads.
  • Mechanical Buffing: uses a cutting compound and works well on large, flat acrylic parts with rounded or rolled edges. It’s ideal for displays that will be touched.
  • Flame Polishing: A hot flame is used to smooth the surface of acrylic. A skilled technician can make parts very clear with no tool marks. The edges and corners often become rounded due to the heat.
  • UV Curing: UV light is used to harden and cure the surface of acrylic, creating a durable and scratch-resistant finish.
  • Dyeing: Acrylic can be dyed to custom colorful acrylic products

FAQ

Most frequent questions and answers

Yes, the CNC router is a precise and efficient machine used for cutting  acrylic materials.

A speed of at least 18,000 RPM is recommended for cutting acrylic. Higher speeds are possible, but you may need to adjust the feedrate to prevent melting. This also depends on the tool diameter

A single or double-flute solid carbide end mill with a spiral upcut  is a great choice for cutting acrylic. This bit is designed for plastics like acrylic, which can prevent plastic chips from building up inside the curve of the cut.

Acrylic’s light transmittance depends on its thickness and grade. Typically, clear acrylic transmits between 92% and 95% of light.

Acrylic is available in cast and extruded forms. Cast acrylic is preferred for machining because it has a higher melting point and greater rigidity, making it more stable during machining and better for meeting tight tolerances, though it’s more expensive.
